Vintage Swimsuits and how do I even shoot this stuff

Long story very short.

My friend and sometimes wonderful assistant Ash Wright let me photograph a shoot he was going to do. A local designer and stylist were shooting some swimwear on the pool deck of a cool loft here in Nashville called Rhythm. I honestly was not feeling the shoot. I thought we were just playing, learning some new light stuff and all of that. Nope, it is actually for a fashion show. That is cool but I let it get to me for some reason. I think I am just exhausted. I am so glad that Ash kicked me and made me do this. The models were fun to work with and I was able to make some great images I think. I also have succumbed to using a soft-box with a 580. Many of you know that I do not use modifiers. The main reason for that is I did not want to spend the money to get all of the stuff. I am pretty cheap. My friend Bruce Dorn sent me one of his strobe slippers for Radio Poppers. It took months for me to put this together. Bruce I want to thank you so much for sending me this stuff to play with. Really amazing. Anyway, I had an old soft-box in storage that I went and dug around for. Got the whole rig together and now I use modifiers.

These are lit with one sometimes 2 580 ex2 using Radio Poppers in ettl mode. ALL STUFF I HAVE NEVER DONE BEFORE! I’m a manual type of guy. Mike Fulton would be proud.

The main light is a medium Photoflex HV3. Don’t think it is made anymore but this is pretty close. MEDIUM SOFTBOX

Amelia / Flirt Photography - Wow, Chuck – great images! You are a lighting master. I LOVED your workshop last Fall and just implemented some of the tricks at a wedding last weekend. Thanks for all you do!

Chuckie - Thanks so much. Glad you are using it. :) Hope your doing well and hope to see you soon.

Mark Lovett - Beautiful work Chuck, and as always, beautiful babes too!

You seem to be doing great with speedlights in the sun. In the image of the lady with the pink hat standing in front of the pool with a strong kicker light on the right, was she standing in sunlight? Did you use the Ezbox in the front, and an unmodified speedlight for the kicker? Just curious what kind of distances from lights to subject, and what kind of setting did you use on this shot?

Congrats Chuck!

Best,
Mark

Andrew Hart - Fantastic work, you should be very proud.
